He said: First let me say that I'm not a boxing fan. But this movie turned out to be more about family and relationships than about boxing. I truely believe the state of Massachusetts invented the F word. Every movie I've ever seen set in Massachusetts is loaded with F-bombs. (The Town, Goodwill Hunting, etc). I believe it's part of their common dialogue (much like I would say peanut butter and jelly). Now, back to the movie...the movie was a little slow for me, but the assorted characters were very well done. Christian Bale must have lost 30 or 40 lbs to play the cracked out/washed up older brother. His performance was very realistic and I would say poignant. Amy Adams showed a side of her I have never seen, but was believable as the feisty "take no crap" girlfriend. This was one whacked out family! Not an ideal family, but family nonetheless...and we all need family. Grade: C+
She said: I heard a lot about this movie. And, I'm probably the only one in America that wasn't blown away by it! I do think that Christian Bale was phenomenal...but, I thought the movie was pretty slow. Of course, it was laced with F-bombs! Too many to even count!! I couldn't quite figure out the family dynamics although it was briefly explained in the movie. The acting was good, but I just wasn't thrilled about this movie. I would have rather it been a dollar movie or Red Box rental. And, I would not recommend this for a family outing!!
